Power Fluctuations

Power Fluctuations

Hey All,

This is more of a PSA. I wanted to make a suggestion, to consider installing a UPS ( check out our Tech Terms – UPS for more info ) with your sensitive networking equipment. We had a case a few weeks ago where the internet and networking servicers continuously were going offline. As it turns out, they had a UPS in place previously, and its battery had died. They plugged all of their equipment into the closest electrical outlet, and that’s when these issues began to happen.

The benefit of (a good) UPS is that it will keep a consistent stream of sing wave power flowing to your networking equipment. So during brownouts or temporary power fluctuations, devices that are plugged into the UPS will then switch over the the UPS internal Battery. These will ensure that the physical hardware electrical components will not be damaged by varying changes in the supplied electrical power.

The other huge benefit is that during a power event, if you have your PC plugged into a UPS, you would have time to gracefully shut it down before you lose any data, or cause any component damage. There are some manufacturers that provide an additional application that you can install on your PC or server that will also allow you to configure your system to automatically shut off by itself if main power is not restored after ‘ X ‘ minutes. This feature is great if you have server applications or critical systems.

When configuring your UPS, make sure you setup the EMAIL feature. The system can send you logs and event updates depending on the severity of the outage you are facing.

Long story short, a UPS is a great investment to keep your electronic equipment safe! If you need more information please get in touch with us!
